The Vicar of Dibley is a sitcom set in a small English village – where the arrival of a new vicar challenges the community to do things differently. The new, extroverted female vicar is very different from the quiet men they are used to, but the eccentric locals soon come to love her intriguing style. The vicar’s genuine warmth and love for everyone is heart-warming and one of the greatest appeals of the show is that the entire family can sit down and watch it together – a factor which made it’s Christmas specials particularly popular.
The gentle humour is typically British, with much of it focusing on the differences between the classes of society. The series ran from 1994 to 1998 (with specials in 1999, 2004, and 2006), and although parts of it feel slightly dated now, many of the scenes are classic pieces of TV history and still well worth watching today.
